Artist's Statement:
My 'Father Figures' installation was a
typography mural of a personal mapping project. The 10 by 20 foot mural
outlines the interactions between father and daughter in a "typical"
21st century broken home. The pieces explores the long-term
ramifications of absentee parents, and how this problem (like others
within our society such as domestic violence and substance abuse) can
be transmitted to the following generations.
The mural was
installed over the course of a week in the Cranbrook Forum Gallery. It
incorporates multiple layers of paint, stenciled spray paint,
reproduced photographs, handwritten notations, as well as displayed
objects from the author's childhood.
A book is planned to record this installation, with expanded text by the author and photo documentation by Beth Merritt Photography. The book will be a full color, coffee table book and available for purchase through this site.
