About this book:  (artist's statement)

"Epistlepoetry" is a chapbook of intimate poems by Ellis Hunter Loth. It is the precurser to what has become "Love in Four Pieces". This was an early experiment in how the physical structure of the book can dictate how a reader interacts with the text, putting them into a particular mindset before allowing them to access the story. In this case, the text was best accessed in a slow, calm, thoughtful mindset. To prepare the reader for this, the book has layers of covers and ties which require that the reader take the time to carefully "undress" the book, causing a crucial delay in accessing the text that gives the reader the time to slip into the right mindset. One of the most interesting results of this experiment, was that the book become somewhat of a litmus, giving a window to how the readers might treat a lover. Some were meticulous about re-dressing the book afterwards, while other left the book splayed and frumpled on the table.
