About the artist: (artist's statement)

Cellar Roots is Eastern Michigan University’s Arts and Literature Journal, of which Melissa served as Editor-in-Chief from 2005-2006. With the name "Cellar Roots" many of the previous 30+ issues had been overtly organic in design. Melissa sought to create a book which broke from this floral tradition, and better reflected the aesthetic of the EMU community. She explored utilizing non-traditional binding methods, and each book was hand-bound with a variety of industrial materials (including bolts, hex nuts, platinum grommets, and even stucco mesh).
