To submit to a particular project with an open CFS, please follow the directions (below)

Poetry: As a general rule of thumb, we do not read poetry that rhymes. If your poetry utilizes end rhyme it must do so in an utterly exceptional way. Unsolicited Submissions:
We are always on the look-out for exceptional texts to work with in book format (chapbooks, portfolios, etc.) We are not currently publishing any ongoing periodicals, so unless you're submitting to a particular project, unsolicited submissions should be for book-length work (a poetry chapbook, a prose novella, a visual portfolio, etc.) by one or more authors, which can be published as a whole. IE, not individual poems for consideration. Due to very limited time, interested authors or artists should query with a sample (5-10 pages or images) of their work first.
A note about self-publishing:
Melissa's undergraduate education centralized around Arts Marketing & Management, specifically strategies for the self-published and small press. She is a big proponent of the empowerment that advances in online and print technology have made, breaking down barriers for authors and opening up new opportunities for 1-to01 (or 1-to-few) relationships between emerging artists and audience.
The design of your work has a huge impact. (Read the longer explanation of this philosophy.) What many do not understand is that a well-designed, high-impact book can be produced for the same cost as the cliche "kinkos" chapbook. A book that has more visual appeal than what has become the "standard" in self-publishing can make a huge difference in terms of profitability (if that's important to you), and also in the chances that your work will be read and digested by an audience (a more important goal to most).
Melissa is, as has been noted in several places now, crunched for time. As a result she chooses her projects very, very carefully. However, she is willing to work with talented, driven individuals to help them achieve success in the self-publishing world. This is more than design consultation, it is first and foremost strategy consultation.
For more information, please send an email outlining your artistic vision, philosophy, goals, and current strategy as well as a sample of your work. If we can not take on your project, we will at least point you in the direction of valuable resources.
"The act of writing is an act of optimism. You would not take the trouble to do it if you felt it didn't matter."
Edward Albee | A good rule of thumb is if you want us to take the time to consider your work, take the time to consider our work first.
Before contacting us with a submission or query, please make sure that you have familiarized yourself with our catalogue, philosophy, and submissions guidelines (where available) first. This will help you determine whether or not your work is a good fit for our projects. You can view details about the projects we're currently working on on the Upcoming Projects page. Each project has details on exactly what we're looking for. Remember, getting published is a process of matching the right piece of your work with the right project. In order to do that, be sure that your work seems to fit with what we've described in our CFS. |
